Passage 1

Robert Spring, a 19th century forger (伪造者) , was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he prospered (繁荣) by selling his small but genuine collection of early U. S. autographs (亲笔签名). Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale and circulation.

Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can’t approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don’t have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.

In Spring’s time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General “Stonewall” Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny’s financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts (手稿) belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.

1. Why did Spring sell his false autographs in England and Canada?

A. There was a greater demand there than in America.

B. There was less chance of being detected there.

C. Britain was Spring’s birthplace.

D. The prices were higher in England and Canada.

2. After the Civil War, there was a great demand in Britain for .

A. Southern money B. Southern manuscripts and letters

C. signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin D. Civil War battle plans

3. Robert Spring spent 15 years .

A. running a bookstore in Philadelphia B. as a forger

C. corresponding with Miss Panny Jackson D. as a respectable dealer

4. According to the passage, forgeries are usually sold to .

A. sharp-eyed experts B. book dealers

C. persons who aren't experts D. owners of old books

5. Who was Miss Fanny Jackson?

A. the only daughter of General "Stonewall" Jackson

B. a little-known girl who sold her father’s papers to Robert Spring

C. Robert Spring's daughter

D. an imaginary person created by Spring

Passage 2

Can you remember the first time you learned how to ride a bike or drive a car? Learning these skills changed your life forever and opened up new horizons. Learning about computers can be like learning how to ride a bike or drive a car. Once you have invested the time to master the skills, you will never go back to the old days. The new technology is simply too convenient and too powerful.

Technological developments through the years have enabled us to do more with less effort. We have continuously looked for better ways of doing things. Each invention and new development has allowed us to extend our capabilities. Today we see one of the most dramatic technologies ever developed-the computer. It extends the capabilities of our minds.

Computers have saved organizations millions of dollars. Furthermore, these same computer systems have opened up new opportunities that would have gone undiscovered or neglected. The computer can multiply what we can do, and the return on Investment is high.

The growth of computer usage is surprising. On the other hand, the computer can do serious damage. Invasion of privacy, fraud (欺诈) , and computer-related mistakes are just a few shocking examples.

The computer is like a double-edged sword. It has the ability to cut us free from some activities, but it can also cut deeply into profits, personal privacy, and our society in general. How it is used is not a function of the current technology. It is strictly a function of how people decide to use or misuse this new technology. The choice is yours, and only through the knowledge of computer systems will you be able to avoid the dangers while enjoying the many, many benefits of the computer age.

Passage 3

Are you thinking of writing someone a letter? Call instead. It isn’t that expensive, especially when you call during the evening, night, or weekend hours. In fact, you can make a ten-minute call anywhere in the continental United States for just $2.60.

For even greater saving, always dial direct, that is, without an operator’s help. Rates(资;费) on direct calls are lower after five o’clock in the evening and lowest after eleven o’clock at night. Collect, person-to-person, and pay phone calls require the services of an operator, and they cost more than direct calls.

Need to call out of the country? Now calls to many overseas places may be dialed direct. Check your telephone direction for overseas area codes.

Next time you have good news, or you just want to stay in touch, remember, a phone call means so much more than a letter. This has been a message from Southern Bell Telephone Company.

11. According to this passage, when is a dial telephone call cheapest?

A. During weekend hours. B. After 5 in the evening.

C. During working hours. D. After 11 at night.
